When you’re over age 50, it’s important to focus on four exercise categories — strength, aerobics, flexibility, and balance — to remain mobile and independent for as long as possible. Our free exercise guide makes it easy to set a routine.
Strength training helps you build muscle mass that enables you to do other types of exercise and live a better quality of life. You can ease into strength training with low-impact exercises, such as squats, overhead press, and step-ups. And as you get comfortable with these movements, you may consider adding light weights to increase resistance.
Aerobic exercise, also known as endurance training or cardio exercise, can help protect your physical and mental health. It’s important to begin slowly and increase intensity as you grow stronger to prevent injuries. Start by making time for some brisk walks.
Flexibility exercises help your joints maintain movement as you age. With group fitness classes for yoga, tai chi, and Pilates, you have options for flexibility training. Static and dynamic stretching can also be done anytime and help with improved mobility.
Balance training can help you lessen the threat of falling as you age. Balance exercises can be done in a group fitness class, such as water aerobics or yoga, or in the comfort of your home by standing on one foot, walking heel to toe, or tapping your foot.
Remember to check with your doctor before you start any new exercise routines. Then, to get started creating your own exercise plan, download our free exercise guide, which includes suggested workouts as well as blank sheets for tracking your progress.
Use slow travel to turn dream retirement trips into experiences
If one of your retirement goals is to travel more, but you’re not sure where to start, slow travel may be the answer. Choose quality over quantity by spending extended time in one location instead of rushing to multiple destinations.
Don’t forget health care and insurance when retirement planning
It’s easy to focus on financial and emotional readiness for retirement. But with health care being one of the largest expenses for retirees, creating a plan for health care may help offset rising costs.
