'You can make small incremental changes that have minimal impact on you, yet greatly impact the world.'

As a Data Governance Manager, Zach Umsted spends his days helping strengthen Wellabe’s trust and understanding of its data. But when the workday ends, Zach keeps his momentum going by supporting environmental and community well‑being.

“I cochair the Volunteer Employee Resource Group to organize and encourage others to support their communities,” he says. “I donate to the United Way as a community chest and to other organizations individually to support the efforts of those dedicated to helping others.”

Zach’s commitment to sustainability began when he took a Corporate Environmental and Social Responsibility course.

“I got freaked out by the absolute enormity of things,” he admits. “Then I took a step back and started thinking about the small changes I could take to be slightly more sustainable (not perfect). That prompted me to get a rain barrel, a first and easy step toward change.”

That simple step created momentum. Zach began seeking out organizations that inspired him and aligned with his values, including Polk County Conservation and Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) Food Pantry Network.

“Polk County Conservation is doing great work to reduce environmental disasters and improve ground cover through the reintroduction of native prairie species,” he says. “And DMARC is helping those below the poverty line, providing food and living assistance.”

Along the way, Zach has learned that sustainability doesn’t require a lifestyle overhaul.

“The whole thing is so big, but you can make small incremental changes that have minimal impact on you, yet greatly impact the world,” he says.

Zach credits Wellabe for creating the space and community to help him stay engaged.

“Wellabe supports me through volunteer time-off and a community of actively engaged, ready‑to‑help coworkers, who are willing and able to support environmental well-being in their community,” he says.

Zach’s story is a reminder that momentum builds through simple steps.
